An amorphous thermoplastic engineering plastic, produced via oxidative coupling polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol. Pure PPO (polyphenylene oxide) has poor processability and high cost. The industrial mainstream is the PPO/PS blend-modified system (commonly referred to as modified PPO), which balances performance and processability.
 

Core Properties

  • Thermal & Electrical: Long-term service temperature ~120°C (adjustable after modification), high heat deflection temperature, and resistance to short-term high temperatures. Excellent high-frequency electrical insulation with minimal impact from temperature/humidity, and strong arc resistance.
  • Mechanical & Physical: High rigidity, good creep resistance, and outstanding dimensional stability (ultra-low water absorption). Pure resin has moderate toughness, which is significantly improved after blending/toughening. Low density (~1.06 g/cm³).
  • Chemical & Weather Resistance: Resistant to weak acids, weak alkalis, oils, organic solvents, and hydrolysis. Pure PPO has moderate weather resistance, requiring the addition of UV stabilizers.
  • Processing: Pure PPO has high melt viscosity and is difficult to process. Modified PPO can be injection-molded and extruded, suitable for thin-walled complex components. Its surface can be electroplated and sprayed.
 

Typical Applications

Electrical & electronics (high-frequency connectors, transformer bobbins, switch housings, relay components), automotive (instrument panels, sensor housings, engine peripheral parts), office equipment (gears and housings for printers/copiers), and water treatment (corrosion-resistant pumps, valves, and pipe fittings).
