Core Definition
An amorphous thermoplastic engineering plastic. The industrial mainstream is bisphenol A-type polycarbonate (PC), produced via melt polycondensation or interfacial polycondensation. It combines high strength, high light transmittance and excellent heat resistance, serving as a representative of balanced performance among general-purpose engineering plastics.
Core Properties
- Mechanical: Exceptional impact resistance (especially at low temperatures), high rigidity, and creep resistance superior to most general-purpose plastics. Drawbacks: moderate wear resistance and susceptibility to stress cracking.
- Optical: Light transmittance ~89% (close to glass), excellent visible light transmittance, and compatible with dyeing and coating processes.
- Thermal & Electrical: Long-term service temperature ~120°C, high heat deflection temperature, and outstanding electrical insulation (stable at high frequencies).
- Processing & Chemical: Suitable for injection molding, extrusion, blow molding and thermoforming. Resistant to weak acids and alkalis, but not to strong solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons and esters. Low water absorption and good dimensional stability.
Typical Applications
Electrical & electronics (mobile phone/computer casings, switches, lamp shades), automotive (automotive lamp lenses, interior trim, safety glass), optical components (eyeglass lenses, safety face shields, optical discs), medical devices (syringes, hemodialyzer housings), and architectural panels (polycarbonate hollow sheets, sound insulation panels).
