What is bio-based nylon

To understand bio-based nylon, it is necessary to first clarify the basic concept: PA, short for polyamide and commonly known as nylon, is a class of high molecular compounds with repeating amide groups in the main molecular chain, and also one of the earliest engineering plastics to achieve industrial production. Distinguished from traditional petroleum-based nylon, bio-based nylon refers to an eco-friendly polymer material whose monomer feedstocks (or partial feedstocks) are derived from renewable biomass resources instead of non-renewable petroleum.

In terms of raw materials and production processes, monomers of traditional PA (e.g., PA6, PA66) rely on petrochemical products, while feedstocks of bio-based nylon can come from biomass such as corn, sugarcane, castor oil and lignin. Take the common bio-based PA610 as an example: sebacic acid, one of its monomers, can be extracted from castor oil and then polymerized with hexamethylenediamine (either biosynthesized or petroleum-based) through polycondensation reaction. There are also fully bio-based PA products, such as bio-based PA6, which is manufactured via ring-opening polymerization using bio-based caprolactam as the monomer. Subsequent pelletizing and secondary processing (extrusion, injection molding, spinning, etc.) are roughly the same as those for traditional PA.

Bio-based nylon inherits the excellent comprehensive properties of traditional PA: it has high mechanical strength and good toughness, capable of withstanding large impact and tensile forces; it features excellent wear resistance and self-lubricity with a low friction coefficient, making it suitable for manufacturing transmission components like gears and bearings; meanwhile, it is resistant to oils and organic solvents, thus widely applicable in the automotive, electronics, textile and chemical industries.

Its core advantages lie in environmental friendliness and sustainability: it has lower carbon emissions during production, reduces dependence on petroleum resources, and some bio-based nylon varieties are biodegradable in natural environments (specific biodegradability varies by grade). However, it currently has drawbacks such as high production costs and the need for further performance optimization of some grades. With technological breakthroughs, it is gradually becoming a development direction of the nylon industry.

Supplementary Note
Common grades of traditional PA (PA6, PA66, PA12, etc.) all have their corresponding bio-based versions. Different grades vary slightly in raw material sources, melting points and rigidity, and are suited for distinct application scenarios. For instance, bio-based PA6 has outstanding flexibility and is mostly used in fiber spinning and hoses; bio-based PA66 has higher rigidity and is suitable for auto parts around the engine.
